  • Numbers

    Craps

    In craps, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10.

  • Two Number Bet

    Roulette

    A bet on two numbers which pays 17 to 1. Also called a split bet.

  • Coin in/Coin out

    Slots

    The amount paid into and paid out by a slot machine respectively.

  • Stiff (A Stiff Hand)

    Blackjack

    A hand totaling 12 to 16. The worst player hand, as this cannot beat any dealer hand that doesn't bust, and can bust if another card is taken.

  • Kalooki (also, Kalookie, Kaluki, kaloochi, Caloochi)

  • Casino Supervisor

  • Come Out Roll

    A roll when no point has been established. The button has the "Off" side up to indicate this.

    A poker hand containing two different pairs and another, non-matching card. Beats one pair and no pair.

  • Croupier

    French term for the dealer. The term is used in baccarat and roulette.

    A poker variation where players are dealt only two cards to make a hand.

  • Underlay

    A bet unfavorable to the player. The opposite of an overlay.

  • Skin

  • Dealer

    Dealer, a casino employee who operates table games.

    A casino employee who operates table games, usually distributing the cards, or places bets and pays out winnings at a craps table. A croupier. Many online casinos offer live dealer games to their customers. The dealers are broadcast online in the real time dealing cards or spinning roulette.

    Examples: 

    A poker dealer distributes cards to players and manages the action at a poker table.

    Many online casinos have live dealer games.

    Blackjack is a comparing card game between a player and dealer. The players compete against the dealer but not against any other players.

    The dealer has Blackjack. 

    Never ask a dealer for advice.

    I feel bad for dealers sometimes, when they have to watch people's tantrums. People throw cards at dealers, and dealers have to take it, they cannot fight back.

    I always tip the dealer, even if I lose.

  • Progressive

    A jackpot that grows with each bet placed on the machine or machines (if it is a linked jackpot). When it is won, it goes back to a preset amount and the process starts again.

  • Paint

    A face card, i.e. king, queen or jack. Also known as a picture or picture card.

    A craps roll of 12, i.e. each die comes up 6. Also known as boxcars.

  • Discards

    Cards that have been used and are no longer in play. In video and draw poker, cards that have been replaced in the hope of improving a hand. 

    Examples:

    You need to put the discards on a tray before you get any replacements.

    In brick-and-mortar casinos, the discard tray often has a red glass filter that allows dealers and the casino security staff to spot the marked cards.

    I always keep an eye on the pile of discards, just in case.

    It is impossible to count cards when the dealer puts discards back into the shuffle.

    The outcome of the game is based on the player decision to keep or discard cards.

  • Casino Hold'em Poker

    A Texas hold'em-based table game in which the bettor plays against the dealer. The player must ante, and can only bet double the ante after seeing their hand.

  • Square Bet

    A bet on four numbers, which pays 8 to 1. Also called a corner bet, as the bet is placed on the corner where the numbers touch.

  • Betting Limits

    The minimum and maximum amount of a single player bet (though a player can often play on more than one spot). This varies from table to table at the casino's discretion.

  • Card Counting

    Tracking the composition of the remaining cards in the deck (usually high vs low cards) in order to adjust one's playing strategy. A competent card counter has a long-term advantage over the house.

  • Sequence

  • Up Card (Upcard)

    The dealer's first face-up (exposed) card. In Basic Strategy, this determines how a player should act on their own hand.

  • Natural

    2) In bacarrat, a total of 9 (natural 9) or 8 (natural 8) with two cards;

    3) In craps, a roll of 7 or 11 on the come-out roll.

  • Up/Down Slot Cycle

  • Payout

  • Nuts

  • Flop

    In games where there are five community cards, the first three are dealt out and exposed together; this is called the flop.

  • Aces

    A craps roll of 2, i.e. each die comes up 1. Also known as snake eyes.

  • Cashout

    Converting chips back into cash.
