  • Back-to-back

    Poker

    Two cards of the same rank or suit dealt one after the other.

  • Payback Percentage

    The long-term percentage of money played on a slot machine that is paid back out to players.

  • Nudge Slot

    Slots

    A slot feature where a symbol which is just off the payline will move up or down to it, resulting in a payout.

  • Standing Hand

    Blackjack

    A hand that has a hard total of 17 or more. Unless the player is a card counter (and rarely even then), the player should never take another card.

  • Free Spin(s)

    Slots

    A bonus offering one or more free spins.

  • Jimmy Hicks

    Rhyming slang for the number 6.

  • Buy the 4 and 10

    Craps

    Placing a buy bet on the 4 and 10. In exchange for a 5% commission, the payout is 2 to 1, rather than 9 to 5.

  • Low Poker

    A poker variant where the worst hand wins. E.g. when straights do not count, A2345 cannot be beaten.

  • Negative Progression

    A betting strategy of wagering more after a loss. The Martingale System is the best known example.

  • Bet Spread

  • Round of Play

    A period in which a bet or sequence of bets is resolved.

  • Pill

    French for "red". In roulette, a red number.

  • Outside Bets

    A bet on the outside part of the layout. The odds range from 1 to 1 to 3 to 1 as the player is betting on a lot of numbers, such as black, even or 1-18.

    In hold'em, the third round of betting, after the fourth community card is dealt. In seven-card stud, the second round of betting when a player is dealt their fourth card.

  • Flat Betting

  • Ladies

  • Hold Percentage

    Percentage of money kept by the casino in the long run.

  • Escape

  • Talon

    The undealt part of the deck. Also called the stub or stock.

  • Tapping Out

    A player losing all of their money.

  • Lobby

    The screen of an online casino where the game selection and news and announcements are presented.

  • La Partage

    If a 0 or 00 comes up, one of three things can happen to an even-money bet (e.g. black, even), from worst to best: a loss, la partage and en prison. In la partage, the player loses half their bet.

  • Early Surrender

    An option, when the dealer shows an ace or face or 10 card, for the player to give up the hand and save half their original bet.

  • Push or Tie

    A situation where the player neither wins nor loses.

    Synonym: Standoff, same as Tie or Push

  • Multiplier Slot Version

    A slot machine that pays for certain symbols on a graduating scale. Rewards playing the maximum with greater proportional payouts.

  • Midnight

    Slang for the number 12. Also called boxcars.

  • Field Bet

    A one-roll sucker bet that the next number will be a 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11 or 12. Pays 1 to 1, except for 2 and 12, which pay more (usually double).

  • Basic Slots

    A slot machine with a single payline and a fixed (not progressive) top jackpot.

  • Crapping-out

    Rolling craps (2, 3 or 12) on the come-out roll.

  • Ten Poor

    A deck that has fewer tens and face cards than the average. A disadvantage to a blackjack player.

  • Bottom Pair

    Poker

    Making only a pair using the lowest community card. Generally a losing hand.

  • Inside Bets

    Roulette

    Bets placed on the inside part of the roulette layout, on numbers or combinations of numbers. Outside bets (e.g. black, even) have lower payout odds.
